We used to let our guinea pigs free-roam. There were no dogs in the area and they learnt to escape the cats. They were much healthier and happier than when they were caged. We figured a happy, if not short life was better than a long, stressed one. They lived like that for a year until we traded them in for rats.

Hehe, I love how they just threw the cucumber bit at one of them (actually hitting it) like they were a pack of rabid sharks that were gonna bite thier hand off if they actually just *placed* it there.
