God creates out of nothing. Wonderful you say. Yes, to be sure, but he does what is still more wonderful: he makes saints out of sinners.
-Soren Kierkegaard
Dictatorship naturally arises out of democracy, and the most aggravated form of tyranny and slavery out of the most extreme liberty.
-Plato
Anybody can become angry - that is easy, but to be angry with the right person and to the right degree and at the right time and for the right purpose, and in the right way - that is not within everybody's power and is not easy.
-Aristotle
It were better to have no opinion of God at all than such a one as is unworthy of him; for the one is only belief - the other contempt.
-Plutarch
Your not going crazy Aurthur, your going sane in a crazy world!
-The Tick
You know, Arthur, when evil is afoot and you don't have any arms, you gotta use your head. When evil is ahead and you're behind, you've gotta do the legwork. But, when you can't get a leg up, you gotta be hip! You gotta keep your chin up, and kick some..
-The Tick
Faith is different from proof; the latter is human, the former is a Gift from God.
-Blaise Pascal
Blushing is the color of virtue.
-Diogenes
Say not, 'When I have free time I shall study'; for you may perhaps never have any free time.
-Hillel the Elder
Were I not Alexander, I would be Diogenes
-Alexander the Great (envying a homeless, smelly, rude Diogenes)
So strong is this propensity of mankind to fall into mutual animosities, that where no substantial occasion presents itself, the most frivolous and fanciful distinctions have been sufficient to kindle their unfriendly passions and excite their most violent conflicts.
-James Madison
Much of the self-righteous nonsense that abounds on so many subjects cannot stand up to three questions: (1) Compared to what? (2) At what cost? and (3) What are the hard facts?
- Thomas Sowell
As far as the laws of mathematics refer to reality, they are not certain, and as far as they are certain, they do not refer to reality.
Albert Einstein
Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one who gets burned.
Buddha
If we look to the laws, they afford equal justice to all in their private differences...if a man is able to serve the state, he is not hindered by the obscurity of his condition. The freedom we enjoy in our government extends also to our ordinary life. There, far from exercising a jealous surveillance over each other, we do not feel called upon to be angry with our neighbor for doing what he likes. We throw open our city to the world, and never by alien acts exclude foreigners from any opportunity of learning or observing, although the eyes of an enemy may occasionally profit by our liberality...

oritteropoThanks
Interesting article, and quite topical. He didn't anticipate how energy consumption in the west would skyrocket as aircon, big tv's, computers etc. would consume ever more and more power, but overall that article has anticipated many recent sift discussions.
To call me a fan of Wigner would be to vastly overstate my familiarity with his work... which begins and ends with that one paper.
@oritteropo (oh ya, as an aside, if your a fan of Wigner, his pupal Alvin Weinberg was already thinking about the energy crisis back in the 50/60's, and wrote a great little diddy on it "ENERGY as an ultimate raw material, or problems of burning the sea and burning the rocks" http://energyfromthorium.com/energy-weinberg-1959/ They cut them from a different mold back then I guess.)

BarsepsThat's interesting, can the same thing be done with Firefox?
I use Chrome AdBlock, and it has made all the difference
chicchoreaI was thrilled and surprised to hear from you...and have handily managed procrastination to the extent of belying my sentiment.

I concur on the "discussions" and celebrate your aspirations. Good luck on that.
I have been scarce as well but due to less lofty distractions.
As to the season greetings...thank you. (I will be using that.
Indeed, haven't been as active these days. I pretty much decided to completely avoid all the political threads as I wasted to many brain cells of that kind of worry. I spend most of my days now indulging in nuclear science, as I am trying to head back to school for Nuclear Engineering. At any rate, hope your holidays go well sir, and have a happy Christma-Hanu-Rama-Ka-Dona-Kwanzaa!
chicchorea...as well you should.
Wow, it must be Christmas season. Thanks for the power point, I shall spend it to promote my agenda of word domination MUHAHAHAHHAH.
chicchoreaYour are quite welcome.

Hello, I have a technical question. I wanted to fix this dead video:
http://videosift.com/video/The-Limits-of-Understanding-Part-1
with the embed from this site
http://worldsciencefestival.com/videos/the_limits_of_understanding
Which is this code:
"<iframe class="wsftv-player" type="text/html" width="528" height="329" src="http://worldsciencefestival.com/videos/embedded/195" frameborder="0"></iframe>"
It says it is invalid, but I can't figure why, looks pretty close to youtube embeds...but I don't know crap about HTML nowadays.
